With a fund rise we’ve been able to collect about 4,000 Euros for help people in East Africa to survive the hunger crisis. We have been able to support rescue teams who sent water, food and medical help for the 10 million people who were affected by the hunger crisis.

Newer, faster, better!

As you might have read in my previous blog, technology does not matter. Or does it? It depends on the product’s intended purpose and application area. While software design and architecture are key to usability and acceptance, maintainability and supportability, technology is an important factor for optimization and improvement. In some cases, usability is also affected by the technology decision, when talking about (smart) devices and mobile applications.

Which is the “right technology”?

The right technology does not exist. You almost always have alternatives. Based on your organizational knowledge and experience, you might tend to choose technologies well known to your experts. This can be dangerous, especially when the already known technology is out of date. Many projects fail because of unreliable or inappropriate technology which was choosen for the intended solution.

Newer, faster, better?

We have seen many systems coming and going in the last two centuries. And we have seen very much bad coding styles, dirty code, non operational software, and bad designs of both the presentation and the architecture, if there was one.

In fact, it does not matter which technology was used. It was almost always the architecture and/or design of the software products which was the success factor. The more data centric an application, the more important is the architecture. With a good design, software remains maintainable and manageable. High maintenance costs are often an indicator of architecture problems.

Currently, 20% of our European servers are located in Europe’s greenest data center. We plan to move 100% of our European systems to this data center within the next 24 months.

The name of this operating center is datadock and it’s located in Strasbourg, and has redundant internet uplinks of more than 110GBit/s. Our servers are dedicated machines, with 100MBit/s internet uplinks.

We are looking for “green operating centers” in USA and Central/South America, to also migrate the American systems.

Vaterverbot.at (“father embargo”) is an Austrian organization which helps fathers during and after their divorce, to fight for their right to see their children. In Austria, Germany and Switzerland, the legislation decides that children shall live with their mother by default. Situations in which children can live with their fathers are exceptional cases.

The goal of this organization is to have gender equality, even after the marriage, and that no kid has to lose his/her dad by law. Children need both parents.
